SIP Trunking Without the Pain
![]() |
Installing a SIP Trunk is a great idea. It can save you a bundle of money and increase the capabilities of your phone system.
It’s easy to think that VoIP is just a newer version of the telephone system that we've been using forever. After all,
the new VoIP phones seem to work pretty much the same way as our old phones. But if you’ve been involved in SIP Trunking, you know that under the covers things are completely different, and these differences can cause
real headaches.
Making a Connection
Reliable service can be a challenge. A VoIP call requires a
real time connection through existing data firewalls, which were never intended for VoIP, and between different PBX systems which are seldom compatible. Moreover, this call must often compete for bandwidth with other users sending email or surfing the web. Often, the results – one way audio, no dial tones, call disconnects and more – cause many organizations to question why they thought about VoIP
in the first place. Too much time is lost reconfiguring networks and troubleshooting VoIP connections.
We offer a better solution. Our SIP Security Controllers can plug into existing networks without time consuming reconfigurations, and provide consistent VoIP connections to anywhere...from anywhere. In addition we can help prioritize voice traffic to ensure better quality of VoIP service. To learn more, go to SIP Connectivity Solutions.
New Security Threats
Unlike conventional telephony, VoIP is based on data transmitted over the public internet, using a new internet protocol, SIP. Just like web and email, which came before, SIP brings new well documented security threats, including; toll fraud, VoIP spam, denial of service attacks, and eavesdropping.
Many service providers respond to these threats by recommending that all VoIP calls go over private networks, or limiting voice and data integration. These actions address many security concerns but at a high cost and with reduced functionality.
At the other end, many organizations often don’t address security at all, mistakenly assuming, that it’s not an issue or being taken care of by their service providers. One thing we've learned the hard way from our experience in the world of web and email is that these security threats are real, and it’s better to ask the right questions today than face the consequences tomorrow.
High costs and limited functionality or ignoring known security threats -is that the only choice? Fortunately, UM Labs can provide organizations and their service providers with better options to implement secure cost effective VoIP systems.
